Anybody have any suggestions on how to mount large prints on foam board. Or where it can be done inexpensively. Also a good source for materials. NJ area

Where in NJ are you? We are located in Manalapan, NJ and I feel our prices are rather reasonable. When it comes to mounting on foamcore, we work only with acid free products, so you do not need to worry about damaged to the prints down the line. If you are looking to do it on your own, Pearl Art centers sell the foam core, and you can use a spray adhesive, but you must be careful about putting the image down smoothly as to not get bubbles and creases. |

| Just a suggestion, as a design student I spent many years mounting presentations on foam core and found the best solution to be double sided tape. If your mounting a heavy paper i'd use the permanent double sided tape. Spray adhesive is messy, toxic, difficult to get perfect and even if you do a great job, bubbles form over time. Tape on the other hand is simple, clean and when you are done you can easily remove the work and re-use the foam core. |

| I cannot endorse the 3M/Scotch adhesive that jkohn refers to in the previous post. I mounted several pictures that Elco printed (beautifully, by the way) in the fall of 2007 on 3/16" foam board using the 3M/Scotch adhesive that I also bought at B&H. I followed the mounting directions to the letter. While initially the mounting process worked fine, I noticed the following summer (after mounting them in the fall of 2007) when humidity levels rose the pictures buckled. That's even with the pictures and foam board being mounted behind glass with pressure. To be fair and in the spirit of full disclosure, I seldom use my air conditioning at my home (in Rhode Island where it is very humid at times in the summer). Perhaps the 3M/Scotch system will not work unless you maintain some humidity control year round. I'd be interested in any feedback on this.
Proper mounting is expensive. But I think I have learned my lesson since I need to have Elco re-print some pictures that, over time have been essentially ruined, by poor mounting (my attempt to save a buck). I shall be consulting with our moderator about a better, long term solution. |
